Natural Light Portrait - I choose to compose my portrait with an asymmetrical balance because I thought it would be better to bring out the person from the flowers better then it would be if the shot was a symmetrical balanced shot. I choose to use deep depth of field because I wanted to show the person similar to the flowers. I used 100 ISO because there was a lot of natural light outside. I used space and value to balance out my photo and colour to match and bring out the photo. This person is natural likes flowers and is embracing that in the picture. The lighting contrast showed the person's light and dark sides to the personality. I used a straight on view for this photo and I choose the models clothes, using the colour to balance the photo.
Family Member Portrait - I choose an asymmetrical balance because I wanted to capture my sister and the beauty of nature. I choose a deep depth-of-field because I wanted to capture the whole setting. I choose a 200 ISO because at the time there was natural light but it wasn't too bright. I used line, shape, texture, value, form, colour, space to balance the composition. This person loves nature and she spends most of her time in the natural spaces. I used a straight on view to capture the person.
Artificial Light Portrait - I choose to take a asymmetrical balanced portrait because I liked the brown background to the model. I choose a deep depth-of-field because I wanted the viewers to see the background. The ISO setting was 800. I used line, shape, colour, texture, value, space to balance this composition. This shows the rebellious side of the model, the smoke coming out of her creates a rebellious vibe. I used a somewhat dark lighting because I wanted to have a deep dark vibe to the photograph. I captured this photo in a straight on view. I used the smoke to help tell the story of the model.
Environmental Portrait - This photograph was taken in a village near my school. I choose to compose my photo in an asymmetrical balance because I wanted to capture the school boy on his bike. I choose a deep depth-of-field because I wanted to capture the boy in his environment. line, shape, texture, value, colour and space help balance the photo. Though the boy is living in a small village, he is happy and adventurous. The lighting help show light and happy life the boy is living. I used a straight on view to capture the boy.

The photographer used deep depth-of-field because he wanted to show the stadium and the lights pointing towards the athlete. This photographer used 800 ISO. The photographer used line, shape, texture, colour, value and shape to create this photograph.

I think this person shows a story about a girl trying to find and follow her dreams. The lighting helped the photographer because it shows the light shining through her skin and showing her face expression and her hair which is dark to show her dark and sad side of her story. The photographer used a straight on view to capture this photo. The colour of her shirt is special because it matches the background and her eyes, this helped show the sadness she has lived through in her life.

The person is lonely, she has two personalities which are shown in the dark and light contrast. The photographer used a 3/4's view shot. The black hat helps show her dark and light personalities. The red on her nails and lips help show that though she is lonely, she is a strong and fierce person in the inside.

Research
ReplyDeleteGreat Portrait research images included in your Visual Journal Blog. For each entry you correctly answered the required questions. Citations (photographer’s name and URL address) were appropriately provided for all entries.
Vocabulary - Minor Problem
You are not consistently using Camera, Software, and overall Unit vocabulary at a very high level. You are developing a better understanding of the Elements of Art and how artist use them within the Principle of Design, Balance. But your use of artistic vocabulary is sometimes on a Middle School level. Listing the Elements of Art illustrates you can correctly choose the involved Elements, but listing does not show you understand their contribution to the composition. You do not consistently use positioning words, Foreground, Middle Ground and Background. Correctly utilizing new vocabulary is a very strong characteristic of a maturing artistic learner.
Camera Skills and Techniques - Minor Problem
Overall your use of the camera was correct. But in your Artificial Light photograph you did not show the ability to control lighting to enhance a portrait photograph.
Software Skills and Techniques - Minor Problem
While looking through your experimentation and final four Studio Work Portrait Photographs, you demonstrate good use of Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance your photographs. All 4 Studio Work photographs were not submitted at the required size. And 2 of your 4 Studio Work photographs were not submitted as the requited resolution. It is important you become better accustomed to using the basic tools within the two software we use in Photography 1. Learning to be in control of software is an important step in becoming a photographer. Please feel free to ask me for more assistance.
Preliminary Ideas from Research - Minor Problem
Your chosen investigation images are visually dynamic portrait photographs. Your Studio Work compositions do consistently illustrate your desire to challenge yourself as a developing artist. It is important to use stimulating investigation research to better your own photographs. You chose high quality professional works, but your Artificial Light photograph lacks the dynamic qualities found in your investigation.
Principles of Design to Tell your Story - Minor Problem
ReplyDeleteThis photography unit was developed to help you understand how the Elements of Art are used to balance a portrait photograph. Overall, your 3 of 4 Studio Work Portraits are well balanced with strong artistic characterises. Your Artificial Light photograph lacks an interesting use of the Elements of Art to elevate the model’s presence in the composition. But together they form a strong Portrait Series. You had difficulty in clearly describing how you positioned the Elements of Art in your photographs to balance the compositions. Being able to communicate using artistic vocabulary is a very important part of a developing photography student.
Exposure (the light and dark value) - Minor Problem
While 3 of your Studio Work Portraits involve proper exposure values, your Artificial Light photograph lacks in the proper distribution of light and dark values resulting in it being unexciting and lacking vibrance. A properly exposed portrait photograph emphasises the model’s presence in the composition and usually the face is not positioned within a shadow.
Composition - Minor Problem
While 3 of your Studio Work Portraits are well balanced strong artistic characterises, your Environmental photograph was not well balanced resulting in it being right heavy. It could have been cropped more and eliminating all the space behind the model. There were enough light value shaped on the right side to counterbalance the model being better positioned in the left side of the composition. In the future, show your progress to your art teacher for feedback prior to final submission. Communication during the creation process will better develop the artist inside you.
Software Editing - Minor Problem
You did not submit the proper size photographs. All of your JPGs were submitted incorrectly. Covered during class, and written in your assignment, were the specifications for size and resolution. Understanding what is needed for printing purposes is a valuable part of a photographer’s growth.
Studio Work Process - Minor Problem
You submitted balanced portrait photograph compositions, and your Natural Light and Family Member photographs are outstanding in clarity and vibrance. While you are illustrating solid success in your use of Elements of Art to create balanced photographs, your overall experience would elevate if consistently returned to your research investigation and attempt to use the artistic qualities used by professionals. When you are not sure what the professional did that made you chose the photograph, or how the professional created the photograph, it will benefit you greatly if you reach out for teacher feedback prior to submission. You have a natural eye and desire to succeed. Bringing in your images for teacher feedback is a valuable step for an art student. Make me, and future art teachers, work for and with you.
